Created and launched simultaneously with the Family Computer version, 1943 Kai: Midway Kaisen is an arcade title, an "alternative" take on the original 1943, which first appeared in 1987[3] and was exclusive to Japan. The visuals and audio have been largely overhauled, and the gameplay has been intensified, featuring laser-equipped WWII aircraft and ground-moving ships. Additionally, the iconic P-38 has been swapped out for a Boeing Stearman E75 N68828. In 1991, the title was ported to the PC Engine as 1943 Kai, once again limited to Japan; this version includes extra levels and brand-new music. Set in the Pacific during World War II, near the Midway Atoll, the mission is to retaliate against the Japanese air force that attacked an American aircraft carrier, hunt down all enemy air and naval units, complete 16 stages of combat, and ultimately reach and destroy the Japanese battleship Yamato. Of these stages, 11 involve air-to-sea combat (with massive battleships or carriers serving as stage bosses), while 5 are entirely aerial, pitting players against waves of Japanese bombers led by a mother bomber. Like in 1942, players take control of a P-38 Lightning. The controls are also similar: button 1 is for firing primary weapons, while button 2 triggers two special actions: a loop maneuver as seen in 1942, or one of three special attacks at the cost of some fuel. Players now have only one life, represented by a large "fuel" gauge that steadily decreases but can be replenished by collecting power-ups, primarily "Pow" symbols. In two-player mode, if both planes overlap on screen, the player with more fuel can transfer energy to the other. Destroying a full formation of red enemy aircraft rewards the player with a power-up, such as a health boost or a new primary weapon. There are cheat codes, unique to each stage, involving actions like holding the fire button or positioning the joystick in a specific direction, which grant players fully upgraded weapons.
