Summary

1905, Sal Island, Cape Verde. At the cemetery, young Lucinda, a curious seven-year-old, encounters a peculiar and enigmatic child. Though the child exudes an unsettling aura, Lucinda is inexplicably captivated by their magnetic charm and forms a bond with them. But their time together is cut short when Lucinda is uprooted and sent to live on another island. Years later, Lucinda returns to her childhood home for her wedding, only to be stunned by the reappearance of her long-lost friend. As she uncovers the truth about their past, she begins to suspect that her friend is not what they appear to be. Their reunion stirs up a cascade of disturbing secrets and revelations—about their parting, and about the path her life is destined to take.
