A Nightmare on Elm Street is a video game that launched for the Nintendo Entertainment System in October 1989 and 1990, inspired by the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. It was created by Rare and released by LJN.
The game is set in the Elm Street neighborhood and is played from a side-scrolling viewpoint. The environment is populated by dangerous characters—such as zombies, cats, dogs, skeletons, bats, and minotaurs—that will attack the player. After being hit a set number of times, the player loses a life. Since the game occurs around midnight, some areas are initially inaccessible and require the player to find a key for later entry. Inside each building, the player must gather all the bones hidden in the level before they can proceed. Once all bones are collected, the player must face Freddy in a boss battle. Beating Freddy lets the player escape the area and earns them a key to unlock new sections of the game.
