The game's narrative is divided into two primary sections. The first part centers around school life and follows a group of students who embark on a hiking adventure in the Japanese Alps. However, the main character, Yuuichi Takawashi, tragically dies in a climbing accident. Due to the soul's reincarnation process, Yuuichi's memories begin to replay. Yet, to access these memories, there must be someone in his heart that he truly wishes to see again. As a result, the story rewinds to Yuuichi's third year of high school, reliving events up until the day of the accident. The second part begins with Yuuichi waking up in a hospital, but not in his own body. Instead, he finds himself inhabiting the body of the heroine chosen in the first part. His soul has, in a sense, taken over her form. He wants to let the people he knows that he is still alive, but since he is not in his original body, this proves to be a challenging task. However, time is limited, as the two souls must eventually merge. Since two souls cannot coexist in one body indefinitely, the one that does not merge will vanish. If Yuuichi's soul successfully merges, he will continue to live on in the new body. As a visual novel, the game plays out in a traditional fashion—players read through text with static backgrounds and non-animated characters, making occasional choices that influence the direction of the story. Additional content includes unlockable CG scenes and background music accessible through the in-game gallery. Ports for Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 include new characters and scenarios not found in the PC version.
