The narrative-driven campaign mode features connected scenarios with set goals, like demolishing a specific structure. In Age of Empires III, the campaign centers on the fictional Black family across three "Acts," each representing a different generation in the unfolding story. All three acts are narrated by Amelia Black (Tasia Valenza). Rather than commanding one of the standard civilizations, players take control of unique civilizations tied to the characters or time periods of each Act: the Knights of St. John in Act I, John Black's Mercenaries in Act II, and the United States in Act III. Most units speak English, except for special units like Spanish Rodeleros and Lancers or German Uhlans and War Wagons. Act I: Blood In the late 1500s, Morgan Black, a Scottish-born officer in the Knights of Saint John, defends their final fortress on Malta from Ottoman forces led by Sahin "The Falcon" during a dramatized version of the Great Siege of Malta. After the Turks retreat, Morgan and his commander, Alain Magnan, uncover a stone archive that speaks of the Lake of the Moon, the Fountain of Youth, and a hidden group known as the Circle of Ossus, who seek the Fountain for their own purposes. Alain sends Morgan to the New World to find the Lake, but he is ambushed by the pirate Elisabet "Lizzie" Ramsey and ends up in the Caribbean. After defeating Lizzie and reclaiming some navigational maps, Morgan sails to New Spain. In Yucatan, he attacks an Ottoman stronghold. Spanish conquistador Francisco Juan Delgado de Leon captures Sahin, and Morgan protects his new Aztec allies from the Spanish, learning that Delgado is searching for the Lake of the Moon, hidden in a town square mosaic. Morgan heads to Florida, but a hurricane damages his fleet, forcing them to land in Havana, Cuba, where he gains Lizzie's respect and promises her a share of the Spanish treasure if she helps him reach Florida. In Florida, as Alain claims the lake, Morgan and Lizzie seize Spanish treasure ships and capture Sahin, killing Delgado in the process. Sahin reveals to Morgan that his true goal was to stop the Circle from obtaining the Fountain. Alain orders Morgan to kill Sahin, but Sahin and Lizzie persuade Morgan that Alain is actually the leader of the Circle of Ossus. At the Lake of the Moon, the group captures a massive, stationary cannon known as a "Fixed Gun." Using the Fixed Gun, Lizzie's fire ships and Morgan's land forces repel the Circle's elite Boneguard soldiers, kill Alain, and destroy the Fountain. After the battle, Sahin returns to Turkey, and Lizzie, having lost her Spanish gold, departs for the Caribbean, though it is suggested she and Morgan may meet again. Morgan silently questions whether they truly found the Fountain of Youth, then fills his empty canteen with water from the lake.
