Storyline
The 15-mission storyline places the Black family in a more historically grounded setting. The first act, Fire, follows Nathaniel Black (the son of John Black and the father of Amelia Black) as he spends the family's entire wealth to support the American Revolution. The second act, Shadow, follows Amelia Black's son, Chayton Black, and his experiences in the Black Hills during Red Cloud's War and the Great Sioux War. The central hub for both acts is the Black Family Estate. Act 1: Fire Nathaniel Black (inspired by Joseph Louis Cook) is the half-Iroquois son of the late John Black from Act 2 of the previous game, raised by his mother Nonahkee and his uncle Kanyenke. The campaign begins with Nathaniel and Kanyenke attempting to prevent the Mohawk and Seneca from joining the conflict in the American Revolutionary War. They are, however, ambushed by a group of Mohawks and retreat to a nearby Oneida village. From there, they launch a counterattack and destroy an enemy Town Center, forcing their enemies to flee. Upon returning to their village, Nathaniel and Kanyenke discover that the Mohawk and a contingent of Hessian mercenaries under Colonel Sven Kuechler have raided the settlement and taken Nonahkee captive. They manage to rescue her, but Kuechler and his main force escape, leading to the dissolution of the Iroquois Confederacy. Nathaniel's village sides with the colonists, and he travels to Boston, where his men help defend a redoubt on Breed's Hill from the British. After George Washington assumes command, a string of losses pushes the colonists across the Delaware, where they are joined by Nathaniel. Washington leads a small group, including Nathaniel, across the river to attack a Hessian camp at Trenton and later defeat the rearguard at Princeton. This is followed by a major victory at the Battles of Saratoga. However, the army is again defeated at Brandywine and Germantown and is forced to winter at Valley Forge, enduring harsh conditions. This prompts Nathaniel to use the majority of his family's wealth to supply the army during the winter. The next mission is the fictional Battle of Morristown, where Nathaniel gets the chance to confront Kuechler, who attempts to destroy the Morristown capitol. With artillery support from Washington, Nathaniel maneuvers around the Hessian flank and relieves the city. Kuechler refuses to surrender and joins the battle, ultimately dying in the fight. After Kuechler's death, Nathaniel is believed to have fought at Charleston, Camden, and King's Mountain. As the war turns in the revolutionaries' favor, the French enter the conflict and help secure a decisive victory at Yorktown, where Nathaniel plays a key role in capturing several redoubts. With the Revolution won, Nathaniel returns home, now destitute after spending the family fortune to equip his volunteers and supply troops at Valley Forge. In the campaign's epilogue (set at Yorktown), the "Old Coot" (revealed to be Morgan Black) from Acts 1 and 3 of the previous game can be seen observing his great-grandson's triumph.
