Summary
Air Fortress is a video game originally published in Japan for the Nintendo Entertainment System, launching there in 1987 and later making its way to North America in 1989. Just 385 copies were sent to the United States in 1987, with an estimated 20 copies distributed earlier as part of a trial run for the system. In PAL-A territories, the game was only made available in Australia, making the North American version exceptionally scarce.
Storyline
Air Fortress follows a fairly standard alien invasion narrative: the inhabitants of the planet Farmel, having recently developed spacefaring technology, set out to explore the galaxy, only to discover a swarm of monstrous "Air Fortresses" heading toward them. Much like the invaders in the later film Independence Day, these Fortresses act like interstellar locusts, devouring all resources and life in their path. The Space Federation deploys their most powerful armada, but it is swiftly overwhelmed by the formidable Fortresses. As a last-ditch effort, they send a lone warrior (Hal Bailman), equipped with a reinforced spacesuit, advanced weaponry, and a small fighter ship, to infiltrate the Fortresses and dismantle them from within.
