Summary

Among the Sleep is a first-person horror adventure where you take on the role of a two-year-old child. After being awakened in the night by strange noises, you venture into the darkness in search of reassurance. The game conveys fear through its atmosphere and discovery, rather than through scoring or combat mechanics. In Among the Sleep, you feel defenseless, frightened, and trying to understand the world around you.

Storyline

The tale starts with a young child celebrating his birthday at home with his mother. The festivities are cut short by a visitor at the front door, unseen by the player, though the narrative implies it is the player’s father, with whom the mother is no longer married. The conversation is muffled and partially obscured as the mother raises her voice, turning down the father’s plea to see his child. Her angry tone unsettles the child, whose fear is shown through blurred vision. Soon after, the mother returns with a gift, but she doesn't reveal who it's from. Instead, she takes the child and the present upstairs to his room, a space filled with warm, vibrant colors and sunlight pouring in. Before the gift is unwrapped, the phone rings, and the mother leaves the child alone in the bedroom to play. The gift turns out to be a living teddy bear who introduces himself as Teddy. Teddy is cheerful and inquisitive. After a short time of playing together, they enter the closet, which opens into a large, dimly lit room full of long black coats. Teddy reassures the boy that if he feels scared in the dark, he can hug Teddy to feel safe. Their brief adventure ends when the mother finds them; she gently tells the child to “stop hiding from mommy” and tucks him into bed. Later that night, the boy wakes to find Teddy being taken by an unseen force. His crib is overturned, and the player escapes. He leaves the room and saves Teddy from a washing machine. The bear grunts that 'something is not right,' and urges the boy to find their mother.
