Summary

Anthem is a shared-world action RPG where players explore an expansive environment filled with incredible technology and hidden relics. In this world, Freelancers are summoned to battle fierce creatures, dangerous raiders, and sinister forces seeking to overthrow humanity.

Storyline

A renowned Freelancer named Haluk gathers a group of Freelancers to enter the Heart of Rage and shut down the Cenotaph. Among them is the player, an unknown rookie on their first mission. Joining them is Faye, Haluk’s wife and a Cypher. Early into the operation, all the other Freelancers are eliminated, forcing Faye to order a retreat as the player evacuates an injured Haluk. The disastrous mission shatters public trust in the Freelancers, whose numbers have been severely reduced. Two years later, the player has taken refuge in Fort Tarsis, a border city between the Heart of Rage and Antium, the capital of Bastion. Working alongside a young Cypher named Owen, they take on small Freelancer jobs for the locals. Owen dreams of becoming a Freelancer, though his psychic abilities make piloting a Javelin difficult. A Corvus agent named Tassyn hires the player to track down a spy who disappeared while embedded with a smuggling group known as the Regulators. At a ruined Regulator base, they meet The Monitor, a high-ranking Dominion official. The Monitor is a powerful Cypher and an expert Javelin pilot who took part in the attack on Freemark that birthed the Heart of Rage. The Monitor kills Tassyn’s spy and steals a hidden Shaper relic. Tassyn deduces that the Dominion is gathering relics to try and reach the Cenotaph again, and rehires the player to get there first. She also reveals that Haluk and Faye have spent the last two years devising a new strategy to disable the Cenotaph, and brings them on board for the mission. Haluk and Faye believe the only Javelin that can survive the Heart of Rage is General Tarsis’s legendary Javelin of Dawn. Using clues from the tombs of Tarsis’s Legionnaires, they find Tarsis’s hidden tomb. Inside, the player retrieves Tarsis’s signet, a key to the Fortress of Dawn—where the Javelin of Dawn is said to rest. At the Temple of Dawn, the player faces trials of skill and endurance. After reenacting Tarsis’s final battle, a ghostly image of General Tarsis appears and declares the player worthy of a Legionnaire of Dawn, granting access to her Javelin. Before the player can claim the Javelin of Dawn, their own Javelin suddenly malfunctions. Owen arrives, admitting he sabotaged it so he could take the Javelin of Dawn for himself. He plans to accept The Monitor’s offer to save Fort Tarsis in exchange for helping him, and accuses the player of blocking his path to becoming a Freelancer. Before he flees in the Javelin of Dawn, Faye scans its unique shielding system, the Shield of Dawn, in hopes of replicating it so the player can enter the Heart of Rage. Haluk and Faye manage to build a copy of the Shield of Dawn, but cannot activate it. At the same time, Tassyn arrives to warn that the Dominion is approaching the Heart of Rage. She also reveals that she hired the player at Faye’s request to take over Haluk’s role as a Javelin pilot. Upset, Haluk flies to the Fortress of Dawn in search of a way to activate the Shield of Dawn, only to be ambushed by the Dominion. The player arrives to find Haluk rescued by Owen, who apologizes for his betrayal. As a gesture of peace, Owen hands over the Shield of Dawn before leaving. After installing the Shield of Dawn on their Javelin, the player returns to the Heart of Rage, with Faye and Haluk offering remote support. They discover The Monitor has merged with the Anthem through the conduit and must battle him. After defeating The Monitor, Faye uses her abilities to shut down the Cenotaph and seal the Heart of Rage. As the group celebrates in Fort Tarsis, Tassyn pulls the player aside to show the body of a recently killed Urgoth found within Bastion’s borders. Suspecting a new threat, Tassyn urges the player to be ready for more action.
