Inspired by a TV anime series from manga legend Osamu Tezuka, Blue Blink is an adorable platformer that successfully carves out its own niche. The game is split into distinct zones, each introduced by a map screen. Inside these zones, players can pick their path to the finish by exiting levels at specific points. Progressing through each area requires finding a 'master key' that grants access to the boss — sometimes a tricky task that involves shooting at seemingly empty parts of the screen just in case. Character control is unique: in every stage, you can choose from three characters, with the others controlled by the CPU following you in a strange procession. These characters are fixed and change from stage to stage, each offering different abilities. Some excel at jumping, while others struggle in the air but have powerful spread-shot weapons. Once you secure the master key and reach the final stage of the area, you enter a boss fight where you ride the namesake donkey, battling your way forward to unlock the next section.
