Athena is a platform-based arcade game that also saw release on several consoles. It was originally developed by SNK for the arcade version, later ported to the NES by Micronics, and adapted for various other platforms by Ocean Software. The game centers around a female lead, with her character design clearly emphasizing the female form as a key marketing element.
Princess Athena, a noble from the celestial realm of Victory, grew weary of the palace's dull routine and ventured out in search of excitement, unlocking a forbidden gate. She tumbles from the heavens—her gown lost in the fall—and lands in the Fantasy World, a realm governed by Dante. To reclaim her destiny, Athena must battle fierce beast-like warriors and overcome countless perils, ultimately facing Dante in a climactic showdown to liberate the Fantasy World and return home to her kingdom.
