More of an exploration-based shooter than a typical blasting experience, *Atomic Robo-Kid Special* takes all the core elements from the arcade version and gives them a fresh twist for the PC Engine. The control scheme may take some time to get used to—pressing button I lets you choose from one of four weapons you gather during your journey, while holding down button I locks your facing direction, making it easier to back away and shoot at the same time. It might feel a bit tricky at first, but mastering it is crucial. The four weapons vary in effectiveness. The forward and diagonal shots are only really useful when you’ve lost access to the stronger options, as the missile and full-fire are the ones you’ll rely on most. The missile is especially handy in certain levels where you need to blast through walls to move forward. The level design is diverse—some are horizontal, others resemble mazes, and there are two distinct boss stages: one features a small enemy on the far side of the screen, shielded by a barrier you must destroy, and the other pits you against a massive mechanical beast that relentlessly chases you through an arena.
