Avalon Code’s story and gameplay are centered around the Book of Prophecy, located on the touch-sensitive bottom screen of the Nintendo DS. To log a person, creature, plant, or weapon, the player performs a “Code Scan” by using the Book itself—activated by the B button—to strike the target. The narrative follows a young peasant who has been haunted by prophetic dreams for weeks before the game begins. In the opening cinematic, the protagonist experiences a vision in which a cryptic voice reveals that their world has cycled through numerous rebirths and is destined to repeat the pattern of correction, destruction, and renewal until “true enlightenment” is reached. The voice also discloses that the hero has been chosen by higher powers to judge the worthiness of the world’s people, places, and objects for survival in the next cycle following a fiery cleansing.
