Summary
Up to three players take on the role of the Battletoads, fighting through six levels filled with aliens and mutant rodents to rescue the universe from the Dark Queen. The game features vertical and bonus stages as well. Each Toad wields a unique signature move, and as with the series' tradition, players can throw enemies off the screen, breaking the fourth wall. Rare pushed the boundaries of violence and gore in Battletoads Arcade, as it was intended for arcades rather than home consoles. It marked Rare's first use of 3D graphics technology, later seen in Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct. Despite strong playtesting and financial potential, the publisher was reluctant to release the game. A version for the Super Nintendo was in development but ultimately scrapped. The game finally reached consoles when it was included in the 2015 Rare Replay, a collection of Rare’s classic titles for the Xbox One.
Storyline
She’s returned… the Dark Queen, that’s right. This time, her evil schemes are hiding close to the Galactic Corporation’s defense fleet, aboard her sinister rocket, the Gargantua. Our home-toads are ready to take her on, determined to battle the Queen and her notorious henchmen, Big Blag and Robo-Manus. But the always-vigilant Dark Queen isn’t about to risk defeat—this time, she’s brought in fresh threats in the form of new villains like General Vermin and Robo Rat!
