In 1993, a Game Boy adaptation of Battletoads was launched under the title "Battletoads in Ragnarok's World." This version omitted several stages and only supported single-player mode. The subtitle was added to distinguish it from the earlier Battletoads title on Game Boy, which was an entirely separate game. Okay 'toads! Time to even the score! When the wicked Dark Queen snatches your best pal and the most stunning gal in the Mazallion Star Cluster—what’s your move? Are you gonna weep? Tuck tail? Summon the Starcops? Not on your life! You're a BATTLETOAD, and BATTLETOADS don't shed tears, run away, or ask for help. BATTLETOADS get furious—and then they strike back! So, grab your Blaster, power up the Toadster, and head straight for the Dark Queen’s world—but be careful, 'toad, because this villain is no joke and has a bunch of nasty surprises waiting for you, like the Psyko Pigs, the Mutant Ratpack, Robo-Manus, and the Saturn Toadtrap, just to name a few. You'll need every ounce of your combat skills to take her down—using the Battletoad Butt, the Big Bad Boot, and the Nuclear Knuckles. And hey, don’t forget to bring the Jet Turbo, the Space Board, and the Speed Bike. You're gonna need them all, 'toad, if you want to save your friends and escape that planet with your green hide still on!
Professor T. Bird, along with the three Battletoads—Rash, Zitz, and Pimple—are transporting Princess Angelica to her home world aboard their ship, the Vulture, so she can meet her father, the Terran Emperor. While Pimple and Angelica take a casual ride in Pimple’s flying car, they are suddenly attacked and captured by the Dark Queen’s vessel, the Gargantua. The Dark Queen and her forces have been hiding in the void between stars since their defeat by the Galactic Corporation in the battle of Canis Major. Pimple sends a distress signal to the Vulture, alerting Professor T. Bird, Rash, and Zitz. Discovering that the Gargantua is concealed beneath the surface of a nearby world known as Ragnarok’s World, Professor T. Bird flies Rash and Zitz to the planet in the Vulture to mount a rescue. Between levels, the toads receive strategy updates from Professor T. Bird, as well as taunts from the Dark Queen. The professor deploys the toads to the first level, Ragnarok Canyon, the planet’s surface defended by axe-wielding Psyko-Pigs and Dragons, which can be ridden if defeated first; the level’s boss is the Tall Walker, a towering enemy that hurls boulders the heroes must return while dodging its laser fire. The toads then descend into the second level, Wookie Hole, a vertical-scrolling Impact Crater where they must avoid ravens that can sever their Turbo Cable, Retro Blasters that emerge from walls to fire electric bolts, Electro Zappers that unleash 2,000 volts of energy, and Saturn Toadtraps—carnivorous plants that swallow the toads. Riding stages include the third level, Turbo Tunnel, where players maneuver a Speed Bike through narrow stone corridors, using ramps to cross wide gaps; the fifth level, Surf City, where players ride a "Space Board" across water, dodging logs, whirlpools, mines, and spiked balls; the seventh stage, Volkmire's Inferno, where the toads fly the Toad Plane through a fiery landscape, avoiding fireballs, rockets, and Force Fields; and level eleven, the Clinger-Wringer, where the toads ride unicycles while evading a hypnotic energy orb called the Buzzball. Each of these stages includes a beat 'em up segment, with Surf City featuring a boss battle against Big Blag, the leader of the Dark Queen’s rat army, who can crush the Battletoads with his blubber slam, and the Buzzball also serving as the final boss of the Clinger-Wringer.
