Summary

Bloody Roar, referred to as Bloody Roar: Hyper Beast Duel in Europe and Japan, is a fighting video game initially developed by Raizing (now known as Eighting) for the arcade. It was later ported to the PlayStation by Hudson Soft and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for that platform. The arcade edition launched on July 7, 1997, and was marketed as Beastorizer in North America. The PlayStation version arrived in Japan on November 6, 1997, in North America (under the name Bloody Roar) on October 31, 1997, and in Europe during March 1998. Bloody Roar marks the beginning of the Bloody Roar video game series, which went on to include four sequels across various platforms. The plot follows a group of warriors called "zoanthropes," individuals with the ability to shift into hybrid human-animal forms known as "Beasts." These characters are targeted by the Tylon Corporation, a clandestine organization aiming to weaponize zoanthropes through mind control. Critics praised the game for its creativity and visual style, though the audio elements were met with more varied responses. Its popularity led to a re-release as part of The Best line on October 14, 1999, and it was later made available on the PlayStation Network in North America on August 20, 2009.

Storyline

Zoanthropes are individuals with the unique ability to transform into animal hybrids at will. Tylon, a powerful bio-corporation, conducts ruthless experiments on them, seeking to weaponize their abilities for military purposes. The global organization deploys these enhanced soldiers in covert and large-scale invasions across the world. Yugo, a Zoanthrope with the traits of a wolf, is on a mission to avenge his father, who was killed in a conflict with Tylon. During his quest, he reunites with Gado, a former ally of his father. The two form a pact to dismantle Tylon, rescue the captives, and stop the corporation's inhumane research. But they are not prepared for Uriko, Tylon's ultimate secret weapon. A young girl manipulated and brainwashed by the corporation, Uriko can transform into the Chimera, a formidable Zoanthrope. Fighting against her proves to be a major challenge, yet Yugo is aided not only by Gado but also by Alice, a former Tylon hostage who once knew Uriko before her mind was taken, and Mitsuko, Uriko's mother. Working together, Yugo, Gado, Mitsuko, and Alice manage to awaken Uriko's true self and free her from Tylon's control. After this breakthrough, Gado destroys Tylon's headquarters and exposes the corporation's experiments to the world, along with the existence of Zoanthropes, ushering in a new age for humanity.
