B.O.B. (called Space Funky B.O.B. in Japan) is a video game that came out in 1993. It combines side-scrolling action with 2D shooting and platform gameplay.
When B.O.B. crashes his father's space car while en route to pick up his date, he ends up stranded on a dangerous asteroid teeming with hostile enemies. By gathering power-ups and relying on quick reflexes, B.O.B. attempts to escape the asteroid and reach his date. He battles through three bizarre worlds, facing off against a variety of massive or lightning-fast foes (bosses) and racing through several high-speed cart levels. Each level features unique environments, such as enclosed space colony metropolises, sprawling alien hive structures, eerie biomechanical labs, ancient (and seemingly haunted) temples, and deep magma caverns. Some of these settings are exclusive to specific worlds. At the conclusion of each world, B.O.B. stumbles upon a new space car to aid in his journey. The first two cars, however, break down in humorous ways, stranding him on new alien worlds. With the final vehicle, B.O.B. finally arrives at his date, who turns out to be a towering, blue female robot with an enormous mouth, who scolds him for being late. As she berates him, a lithe red female robot zips by on a space surfboard. Frustrated with his annoying date, B.O.B. exclaims, "That's the girl for me!" and speeds off after the red robot. The game closes with B.O.B. and his new companion sitting on a small asteroid, gazing in quiet awe at the stars. Behind them, his car—where his date had hidden her surfboard in the backseat—sputters and floats away into space, likely leaving them stranded, though neither seems to care.
