Summary

Join forces with Bowser Jr. in an open 3D adventure to halt his father’s destructive crusade. Sprint and leap across a chain of islands to gather the enigmatic Cat Shines, and confront the massive Fury Bowser whenever he rises from the sea to cause chaos.

Storyline

On a sunny and clear day, Mario strolls along a trail just outside Peach’s Castle, near where he first discovered the shattered Clear Pipe at the start of the main story. He spots tiny pools of dark sludge on the ground and traces them, eventually coming across a large smear of black graffiti shaped like Shadow Mario’s emblem from *Super Mario Sunshine*. The graffiti grows and forms a portal that Mario tumbles into, sending him to Lake Lapcat, where a heavy downpour is in progress. As soon as Mario lands, he runs into Bowser, who has evolved into a more massive and formidable version known as Fury Bowser. Mario locates a Cat Shine nearby, which purifies the sludge from a lighthouse. The lighthouse emits a brilliant beam of light that blinds Fury Bowser, causing him to retreat into the Fury Sun at the center of the lake. Right after, multiple islands rise from the water. Once Fury Bowser is gone, the storm subsides, and Mario comes across a frightened Bowser Jr., who explains what caused his father’s transformation. He shows Mario a painting he made of his dad and then darkens it with his Magic Paintbrush, revealing that he was the one who corrupted Bowser. He understands now that both he and his father are in danger, and hesitantly asks Mario for help, making it clear this wouldn’t usually be the case. Mario agrees, and Bowser Jr. joins him for the remainder of the journey.
