Summary

Caesar III is part of Sierra's City Building Series and was launched in October 1998. In Caesar III, cities are designed to realistically portray the lives of Roman citizens: the poorest plebeians reside in tents and huts, while the wealthiest patricians occupy luxurious villas. Common food sources include wheat, fruits, vegetables, and pork, with wine being essential for certain festivals and household rituals. Citizens stroll the streets dressed in their respective attire and can share their names and opinions about the city with the player. The game uses a two-dimensional isometric perspective with a fixed zoom level, allowing the city to be rotated by 90 degrees. Access to services like market goods, entertainment, sanitation, education, and taxation is managed through "walkers"—individuals dispatched from their buildings to patrol the city. Any home a walker passes is considered to have access to the services provided by that walker's building. The movement of goods and the reach of services are visually represented by citizens on the streets: a player can observe a farm's crops growing, and once ready, a laborer will push a loaded cart from the farm to a nearby warehouse or granary, returning with an empty one. Background music plays throughout the game, changing based on the situation—starting with calm melodies, shifting to war drums during conflicts, and turning to triumphant tunes as the player approaches their goals. Crowd sounds complement the music, with additional noises from workshops and the sounds of combat at relevant moments. The game offers two play styles: Mission Mode, which functions similarly to the traditional "campaign" found in other strategy games, and City Construction Mode, where the player builds a city from the ground up in a single scenario.
