In August 1941, Private Lucas Riggs is based at Tobruk, Libya as part of the Australian-led Rats of Tobruk garrison. After a botched ambush on the Royal Italian Army and Africa Korps, Riggs is tasked with retrieving supplies for the British Army, working with fellow Rat Private Desmond "Des" Wilmot and British lieutenant Robert Jacobs. Riggs, Des, and Jacobs uncover intelligence about General Erwin Rommel and destroy a German supply depot in the process, but are arrested by Major Henry Hamms for insubordination. In 1942, during the Battle of El Alamein, Riggs and the Rats are ordered by Hamms to set up a defensive line, but Riggs disobeys and attempts to retake a hill and call in air support, with Des providing cover. They succeed, but Des is killed in the fight. Frustrated by the lack of recognition for the Rats' efforts, Riggs punches Hamms in anger, leading to a prison sentence. In June 1942, U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Wade Jackson fights in the Battle of Midway with his tail gunner, Aviation Machinist's Mate Mateo Hernandez. In November 1943, while attacking the Imperial Japanese Army in Bougainville, Jackson and Hernandez's aircraft is shot down, and they are captured by IJN and IJA forces. They are later rescued by the 93rd Infantry Division, who help them obtain an Imperial Japanese Navy Aichi D3A to aid in the island's recapture. In August 1942, Red Army medic Polina Petrova witnesses the Luftwaffe's invasion of Stalingrad. She is unable to save her father Boris from being executed by a Fallschirmjäger unit, but escapes with her brother Misha and a group of Soviet partisans. Petrova eventually earns the nickname "Lady Nightingale" as she hunts down Leo Steiner, the Wehrmacht commander behind the invasion. In January 1943, Petrova and Misha attempt to assassinate Steiner in Stalingrad, but Misha is gravely injured. He sacrifices himself to allow Petrova to escape. Petrova confronts Steiner and slays him and his personal guard, inspiring the people of Stalingrad to reclaim the city from the Heer. She then turns her attention to Steiner's superior, Hermann Freisinger. In June 1944, British paratrooper Sergeant Arthur Kingsley takes part in Operation Tonga, where he and the Parachute Regiment help destroy the Melville Gun Battery and several bridges to support the Allied invasion of Normandy. Kingsley forms a bond with fellow paratrooper Sergeant Richard Webb, who becomes his trusted ally. Kingsley, Webb, Petrova, Jackson, and Riggs, along with a sixth soldier named Milos Novak, are eventually recruited by Captain Carver Butcher to form the first special operations task force, codenamed Vanguard. Kingsley is chosen as the team leader. In April 1945, Task Force Vanguard hijacks a train heading to Hamburg, Germany, in search of intelligence on Project Phoenix, a covert Nazi program led by Freisinger. While infiltrating a Kriegsmarine submarine, the team is captured by Freisinger’s Feldgendarmerie, except for Jackson, who evades capture, and Novak, who is brutally killed by Freisinger. Vanguard is taken to the Waffen-SS and Gestapo headquarters in Berlin, where Freisinger assigns officer Jannick Richter to interrogate them. Jackson is also captured after trying to steal a plane; Richter demoralizes the team by executing Webb. Unaware of Project Phoenix’s true purpose or Freisinger’s role, Richter interrogates Petrova and Riggs to uncover the connection between Steiner, Rommel, and Freisinger. He eventually deduces that the project was a coup attempt to install Freisinger as the new Führer of the Fourth Reich. As Berlin is besieged by the Red Army following Adolf Hitler’s suicide, Riggs escapes interrogation and frees the team, while Kingsley kills Richter to avenge Webb. Vanguard tracks Freisinger to the airport, where they capture and execute him. The remaining four board Freisinger’s plane, discovering a wealth of German documents and assets that reveal global Nazi covert operations. Kingsley decides to pursue Project Aggregat, a secret V2 rocket facility, and orders Jackson to fly there to investigate.
