Storyline

June 6, 1944, marks the day United States Army Private First Class Ronald "Red" Daniels of the 1st Infantry Division joins his squad in the assault on Normandy Beach. His team includes Private First Class Robert Zussman, his closest friend, Private Drew Stiles, Technician Fifth Grade Frank Aiello, Technical Sergeant William Pierson, and First Lieutenant Joseph Turner. During the battle, Zussman is stabbed and forced to sit out. Zussman returns for Operation Cobra, where Allied forces push to retake the town of Marigny. The squad is then tasked by Colonel Davis with a joint mission alongside British Special Operations Executive officers Major Arthur Crowley and Vivian Harris to stop a German train transporting V2 rockets near Argentan. Daniels and Zussman manage to derail the train before being guided back to their unit by a French Resistance leader named Rousseau. A week later, Rousseau and Crowley infiltrate a German garrison in Paris to secure explosives for the squad's upcoming assault. During the mission, Rousseau kills SS-und Polizeiführer Heinrich in revenge for the death of her family. The squad then successfully liberates Paris. Two months later, the squad takes control of a German-occupied hotel in Aachen. They find civilians inside, and Turner orders their evacuation, much to Pierson's frustration. A young girl named Anna goes missing, and Daniels searches for her. German forces open fire on a truck carrying the civilians, killing Anna's older sister. Pierson sends the truck away without protection, causing a rift between him and Turner. During the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, the platoon is ordered to capture Hill 493. Turner divides the platoon into two groups: Pierson and Zussman are to advance toward the hill, while Turner and Daniels provide covering fire until they can regroup at the base. Turner's group receives a message that Pierson has launched an attack on the hill without orders. The platoon destroys an artillery position, but the Germans counter with a Tiger II tank. Daniels is knocked out while attempting to disable the tank, which is ultimately destroyed by Staff Sergeant Augustine Pérez. Turner is mortally wounded while rescuing Daniels and orders him to leave as he covers the platoon's retreat. Pierson takes command of the platoon and appoints Daniels as his second-in-command, promoting him to Corporal. Amid the Battle of the Bulge, the platoon is encircled by German forces. Daniels meets an African-American technician named Howard, who helps them establish contact with air support. The platoon captures several German soldiers and learns they were ordered to destroy a bridge at Remagen, the last crossing over the Rhine. After intercepting the explosives in transit, Pierson orders an attack on a nearby airfield to destroy the remaining explosives. The mission fails, leaving Daniels and Zussman surrounded. Daniels is rescued by Howard, while Zussman is captured and sent to the German POW camp Stalag IX-B. There, Zussman is interrogated about his Jewish background by SS officer Metz, beaten, and sent to a labor camp. Daniels is hospitalized for his injuries. While in the hospital, Daniels learns from Davis about the events that changed Pierson during the Battle of Kasserine Pass. After recovering, Daniels confronts Pierson in his tent and tears up his honorable discharge papers to rejoin the platoon. They successfully secure the last bridge over the Rhine. The platoon moves into Germany, liberating concentration camps in search of Zussman, eventually arriving at the abandoned Berga labor camp. The survivors had been sent on a death march. Daniels finds and saves Zussman by killing Metz before he can execute him. At the end of the war, Daniels leaves his platoon and returns to Texas, reuniting with his wife and newborn son. He names his son Joseph Turner in honor of the late lieutenant. He visits the grave of his older brother, Paul, who died protecting Red from a wolf when he was a child. He places his Bronze Star on the grave, saying his brother deserves it for showing him the true meaning of heroism.
