Chess was developed in March 1980 and later ported to the IBM PC in December 1981. This is likely the first chess game ever to run on MS-DOS. Considering its age, it's understandable that the game uses only text-based graphics. The chessboard and pieces are displayed using ASCII characters. Similarly, it's not surprising that player input is handled through simple keyboard commands. In Chess, there is no option for multiplayer — you only compete against the computer. As is typical for such games, you can choose the difficulty level of the AI. The game provides 24 distinct skill levels.
