The Chocobo has been a recurring character in every Final Fantasy game since Final Fantasy IV, depicted as a big yellow bird that players can ride to travel or use in battles. In Chocobo Racing, you can race a Chocobo alongside various characters from the Final Fantasy universe, such as Cloud and Cid from Final Fantasy VII, as well as characters designed specifically for the game, speeding through a variety of fantasy worlds while using a range of weapons to help you win. The game features single-player and two-player racing modes.
Chocobo Racing draws inspiration from themes and elements found in Final Fantasy I through VIII. The Story Mode is narrated by Cid and features nine chapters presented in a pop-up book style, enhanced with FMVs. To advance, players must defeat the designated challenger in each chapter. Before each chapter starts, players can choose to view the story or skip directly to the race, unless it's their first time playing Story Mode. Characters The characters in Chocobo Racing come from recurring figures and creatures in the Chocobo's Dungeon and Final Fantasy series. Eight characters—Chocobo, Mog, Golem, Goblin, Black Magician, White Mage, Chubby Chocobo, and Behemoth—are available from the start, while secret characters like Cactuar, Bahamut, Cloud, Aya, and Squall can be unlocked after finishing Story Mode.[5] Story The first chapter, "Gadgets a go-go," opens with the inventor Cid giving Chocobo a pair of "Jet-Blades" and inviting him to test them on the racetrack behind his workshop.[13] After the race, Mog the Moogle arrives and inquires about the progress of the racing machine he had ordered.[14] Cid assures Mog it will be ready by the next day, but later admits to Chocobo that he had forgotten about it.[15] The following day, after showing Mog his scooter,[16] Chocobo and Mog compete in a race. When Chocobo wins, Mog confronts Cid about the poor performance of his vehicle, and Cid explains that Chocobo's victory was due to his "Dash" ability.[17] He reveals that the Blue Crystal on Chocobo's leg-ring is the key to his Dash.[18] Mog considers his own weak "Flap" ability and decides he wants a Blue Crystal too, so Cid suggests they go on a journey to uncover the secret of the Blue Crystal.[19] Together, they set off to learn the truth about the Blue Crystal, racing many others along the way. Upon arriving in Mysidia, the village of mages, a White Mage there points out that all the companions are carrying Magicite, which they had previously called "Blue Crystals." The group expresses interest in the legend of the Magicite shards, and the White Mage agrees to share it if they race her in the Floating Gardens, offering the story as the prize for the winner. After winning, she recounts the tale: "Magicite Shards are scattered across the world. Once, there was a single large Magicite Crystal...But people fought over it constantly. So the founder of Mysidia, the great magician Ming-Wu, shattered the Crystal into eight pieces and scattered them to the winds. He did this to ensure the Magicite Crystal could one day be restored...when all eight pieces are reunited once more".[20]
