In October 1988, Namco launched a version of Genpei Tōma Den for the Family Computer called Genpei Tōma Den Computer Board Game. Included with a physical cloth board, cards, and metallic player pieces modeled after Kagekiyo, it functions as a digital board game in which players vie to control all of Japan. While the original Genpei Tōma Den was a side-scrolling action title, the Computer Board Game version is a role-playing game where players battle foes and buy items and gear from shops. The concept for the game originated with Namco designer Yuichiro Shinozaki, who aimed to further explore and expand the story and setting of the initial game.
