Summary
Todd Thornley IV has had it. After yet another embarrassing defeat at the hands of his rival, Jeff "Crash" Cooney and his blue-collar crew from Southside High School at the All-City Track Meet, Todd has issued a bold challenge to Crash. He's invited two other prestigious high schools to join the competition and added a fourth team backed by his well-heeled father, seemingly tipping the odds in his favor. The game features four playable teams, plus a fifth AI-controlled squad. Each team consists of five athletes, each with unique abilities and limitations, making them more or less effective in different events. Before each competition, players can visit the mall to purchase power-ups for their characters, using the medals earned by their team throughout the challenge as currency. Since the ultimate goal is to collect the most medals overall, players must be careful not to overspend. The game includes two event types: individual events (Hammer Throw and Roof Top Jumping) and head-to-head events (400 Meter Hurdles, Swimming, and Fighting). In individual events, each team member competes in turn, with rankings based on total points. Head-to-head events follow a single-elimination tournament format, where players face off in a series of heats. The winner of each match moves on to challenge a member of Team Thornley for the top spot. The game supports up to four players. Since only two teams can compete at once, the third and fourth players can simply switch between the two controllers. This means a four-player adapter isn't necessary, unlike in other Kunio-kun titles.
