If you've ever played a classic text-based adventure game, a genre popularized by Infocom in the early 1980s, then Dark Mage will come as a delightful surprise. Greg Troutman managed to fit a complete text adventure into an 8K Atari 2600 cartridge, and while it's far simpler than Infocom's titles, it's still a fun and engaging experience. In Dark Mage, you take on the role of a jester who has been exiled from your kingdom, and your mission is to locate and return the king's black rose. Like most text adventures, you navigate the game world by moving in the four cardinal directions, collecting and using items, and interacting with characters you meet. All of this is handled smoothly using the joystick—no typing required!
