The next installment in the Disgaea series. Disgaea 7 takes place in a realm known as the "Hinomoto Netherworld Cluster," drawing inspiration from Japanese culture.
Set within a collection of small Netherworlds known as Hinomoto, a realm that echoes the aesthetics of ancient Japan during its shift from the Edo period (1603-1868) to the Meiji era (1868-1912), the game's narrative and visual style are deeply influenced by the cultural contrasts of these two historical periods. It both parodies and reflects the evolving attitudes and societal changes of the time. The story begins with the end of the warrior age, following the Shogunate's military takeover by a demon named Demmodore Opener after his defeat of the era’s greatest warrior, Mugai Zesshosai, and his loyal followers. The narrative weaves together the journeys of Fuji, a former apprentice of Mugai who has become a wandering swordsman, whose tale mirrors the plight of a samurai witnessing the decline of their way of life; and Pirilika, a devoted Hinomoto enthusiast who arrives just in time to see the culture she admired through films replaced by the modern, metropolitan influences of the Meiji era. Her story satirizes Japan’s Westernization during that time and the modern-day Western otaku fascination with traditional Japanese culture.
