Storyline
It’s a dark and stormy night on Donkey Kong Island when Diddy Kong, Donkey Kong’s nephew, is given the important task of watching over DK’s valuable banana stash as part of his hero training. Donkey Kong entrusts Diddy with the duty until midnight, when he plans to relieve him, while he himself goes to bed, exhausted from the day. At first, everything in the banana hoard seems peaceful, but then Diddy hears strange noises. Voices echo from outside, and Diddy, startled, calls out to see who it is. King K. Rool, having ordered his Kremling henchmen to make off with the bananas, sends two ropes swinging down, and two Kritters drop in. Diddy quickly flips them both with a cartwheel, but soon a Krusha (known as Klump in the manual) arrives to back them up. Diddy, not yet strong enough to take on a Krusha alone, is quickly overpowered and defeated. The Kremlings trap Diddy inside a barrel and toss it into the underbrush. Cranky Kong, Donkey Kong’s grandfather, bursts into the treehouse to wake Donkey Kong and inform him of what’s happened. He urges DK to check the Banana Cave. Donkey Kong is furious, vowing revenge on the Kremlings for stealing his bananas and capturing his young friend. He swears he’ll search every inch of the island to get them back.
