Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 is a role-playing video game created by Square Enix and Tose and published by Square Enix for the Nintendo 3DS. It follows Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 and is the sixth title in the Dragon Quest Monsters series. The game launched in Japan on March 24, 2016. The upper screen of the Nintendo 3DS displays a third-person view of the main character and the surrounding environment, referred to as the "Break World," while the lower screen presents a map of the local area, with the current objective marked in red. The main character wields a device called a Reactor, which helps reveal hidden items or routes. Certain paths can only be accessed while riding a monster. Players can ride any of the 500 unique monsters featured in the game. These creatures are categorized into land, sea, or sky types, meaning specific monsters are needed to access different areas. Players can also outfit their monsters with accessories and enhance their levels. Improving a monster's level can unlock new skills, such as the ability to perform multiple jumps, allowing access to previously unreachable locations. The Reactor can also be used to scan monsters for detailed information. If a player attacks another monster while mounted, the target monster will begin the fight stunned or even knocked out. A competitive mini-game titled "Great Riders Cup" is included, utilizing the monster riding mechanics from the main game and supporting up to four players competing against the AI, locally, or online via Wifi. The game's hero can be personalized with various hair, scarf, boot, pant, and glove color options. Monsters can also be customized in color by rescuing a special monster named Color Fondue, who can apply "Color Fusion" to the monsters the player controls. Like its predecessor, Square Enix released Joker 3 Professional, an enhanced edition of the game, on February 9, 2017. Professional marks the final chapter in the Joker series.
