Dreaming Mary is an original sidescrolling adventure game created with the free RPG Maker VX Ace Lite. It draws inspiration from the Japanese horror title Ib and the surreal experience of Yume Nikki, while also being shaped by the indie platformer Eversion and the anime Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Although it borrows from these sources, Dreaming Mary isn't strictly a horror game. While it does feature horror elements, players who choose to immerse themselves in the dreams rather than explore may never come across them. The game typically takes between fifteen and twenty-five minutes to reach one of its four endings. Throughout the experience, you can interact with objects and non-player characters. Paying close attention to dialogue and your environment is key to moving forward. Sound plays a crucial role in the game, helping players progress and offering clues about Mary's mysterious situation.
Mary is a girl with a deep passion for dreaming. In fact, she dreams so much that she can spend an entire day lost in her imagination. One day, as she falls asleep, she awakens in a familiar yet unique place—different from any of her previous dreams. The people there recognize her and welcome her like an old friend, inviting her to join in their play or lend a hand. After completing all their tasks, she is welcomed further into the heart of the dream.
