Summary
Earthworm Jim 3D is a platformer and the third installment in the Earthworm Jim series. It follows Earthworm Jim and Earthworm Jim 2, and marks the first title in the franchise not developed by Shiny Entertainment, which had recently adopted a strict "no sequels" policy. Interplay Entertainment, having acquired the Earthworm Jim rights, passed the franchise to VIS Interactive. The game went through a troubled and lengthy development process, with multiple delays before finally launching in 1999 for the Nintendo 64 and Microsoft Windows. The reception was poor, with critics stating that the original charm was missing and that, despite the extended development time, the game felt unfinished and lacked features that had been previously advertised.
Storyline
Earthworm Jim is struck by a flying cow, sending him into a deep coma. He awakens inside his own subconscious and realizes he has lost his grip on reality. His former enemies have invaded his mind, and unless he acts quickly, he'll remain trapped in the coma forever. To combat the chaos, his super ego has emerged within his subconscious. To regain his sanity, Jim must seek out the Golden Udders of lucidity. Upon entering his subconscious, he discovers that his four mind chambers have been overrun by his deepest fears. He must gather Golden Udders to unlock the remaining chambers and collect Green Marbles to access the levels within each. Jim battles four villains who have seized control of his mind chambers, ultimately confronting the embodiment of his trauma: Earthworm Kim.
