Elysion is a classic 8-bit JRPG that draws from a variety of RPG influences. While it begins with the player speaking to the local King to set up the story, much like traditional JRPGs, it also borrows mechanics and ideas from other titles in the genre. It visually resembles the original Dragon Quest, allows the selection of multiple main characters like in Final Fantasy, uses real-time combat without cutscenes similar to Hydlide or Ys, and implements a turn-based enemy mechanic where foes only act when the player does, akin to strategy-based Roguelike dungeon crawlers such as the Mystery Dungeon series. The game’s ultimate goal is to vanquish the evil demon Baal. Before this final confrontation, however, the player must first prove themselves to the King. The task involves entering the dungeon beneath the castle and recovering key quest items. After completing this lengthy and challenging dungeon, the protagonist is hailed as the Hero of God and sets out on a quest to defeat Baal. This journey involves exploring the continent to gather powerful magical scrolls and eventually obtaining divine, God-like equipment. The name "Elysion" is inspired by the Elysian Fields, a legendary Roman afterlife for warriors who died with honor.
The mighty darkness of Baal has returned. In reaction, King Elysion VI calls upon four champions—each representing a distinct race—to embark on a mission to vanquish him. Each hero wields a unique class. The champion of Minos is a warrior, the Aylex representative is a mage, the Dionea hero is a rogue, and the Viskam warrior is a magical fighter. At the beginning of the game, you choose one of these champions to play as.
