Summary
In 1993, Sega launched *Eternal Champions* on the Mega Drive/Genesis, aiming to ride the wave of the fighting game craze that had taken the industry by storm in the wake of *Street Fighter II* (1991) and *Mortal Kombat* (1992). To stand out, the game introduced distinctive elements such as a strong narrative focus, fighters from various historical eras, reflectable projectiles, defensive force fields, weapon-wielding combatants, a training mode featuring robotic traps to fend off, an innovative move execution system, and detailed stage-specific finishing techniques known as "Overkills."
Storyline
A timeless entity known as the Eternal Champion foresees the decline of humanity due to the premature and unfair deaths of pivotal figures throughout history who were meant to achieve greatness. In an effort to restore harmony, the Eternal Champion collects these souls moments before their demise to compete in a battle tournament. The winner will have the power to alter their destiny and restore balance to the universe, while the defeated will be compelled to face their fates as recorded in history.
