F-1 Dream is a car racing game for the PC Engine that was only released in Japan in 1988. The visuals match the arcade version exactly, including the pit crew, lane markings, and fans in the grandstands. The controls are also the same: the directional pad allows for full eight-way movement, and the two buttons serve as both throttle and brake and for shifting gears. Press the II button to start the car, and when first gear reaches its limit, quickly switch to the I button. If your car has a Turbo, once second gear is maxed out, press both buttons to activate the afterburner. Releasing the top gear button will slow the car, and pressing it again will speed up again. The game also features slower cars. If you're in the lead or tied with another racer and far ahead of the rest, white cars will appear on the track to challenge you, often right before a difficult turn or drifting into your lane on a straight, forcing you to adjust your path. They're a small hindrance, but one that keeps you alert when you're far ahead of the competition. The console version's designers clearly felt the game needed more depth, so everything beyond the actual racing is completely different. Instead of jumping straight into the F3000 series, the game takes on a career-style approach. You begin by racing a Porsche 911 in street races for money, going head to head with another driver and wagering on the outcome. The money you earn can be used to hire a pit crew that follows you to every race. Once you've made your mark on the streets (or lost all your cash, oddly enough), you'll get the big break: F3000 wants you!
