Fallout: New Vegas is an action role-playing game within the Fallout series. It was created by Obsidian Entertainment and released by Bethesda Softworks. The game launched on Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in October 2010. Set in a post-apocalyptic open world spanning Nevada, California, and Arizona, the game follows the player as Courier 6, a character hired by the Mojave Express delivery service to transport an unknown item across the Mojave Desert to the New Vegas Strip. The story begins mid-delivery when the Courier is ambushed, shot in the head, and abandoned by an unknown assailant who takes the package. Rescued by a helpful robot named Victor and treated by a doctor called Doc Mitchell, the Courier is sent back into the wasteland to avenge the attack and reclaim the stolen goods. In doing so, the player becomes entangled in a conflict between rival factions vying for control of the desert and its key resource, the Hoover Dam, ultimately influencing the region's future. Although it follows Fallout 3 in the series' release order, shares a similar gameplay style, and uses the same engine and some content, Fallout: New Vegas is not a direct continuation. It reintroduces features reminiscent of Fallout 2. The game was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, with over 5 million units shipped. According to market research firm Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, the game has sold nearly 12 million copies worldwide.
