Famicom Mukashibanashi: Shin Onigashima is a Famicom Disk System text-based adventure game. The story follows an older couple without children who take in a baby boy and girl. When the children reach the age of six, a dragon emerges in the land, transforming people into Oni who steal the souls of others. The Oni come to the couple's home and take their souls, prompting the children to set out on a quest to rescue their adoptive parents. Players navigate the game by choosing commands, such as the "Change Character" option, which lets them switch between controlling Donbe (the boy) and Hikari (the girl). The progression of the game is illustrated through changes in the in-game visuals. The Famicom Disk System edition was released on two disks at different times. Disk 2 cannot be played until Disk 1 is completed, and the switch between disks is done while the system remains on. Later versions of the game eliminated the need for disk swapping.
Long ago, in the remote mountain village of Nagakushi, an old couple lived a quiet life. Childless for many years, their fate changed when a dream foretold their responsibility to care for a pair of newborn twins. As the years passed, the children grew into 8-year-olds when disaster struck the western capital. A monstrous dragon emerged, transforming people into oni—fearsome ogres that devour human souls. The oni's terror reached even Nagakushi, where they claimed the lives of the elderly couple. Miraculously, the twins remained untouched, and they embarked on a journey to rescue their parents, unaware that this quest would uncover the truth behind their mysterious beginnings.
