Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly

Summary

Crimson Butterfly serves as the second entry in the Fatal Frame series, though it is not a direct follow-up to the original game, Fatal Frame. The narrative centers on twin sisters Mio and Mayu as they venture into a deserted village and face eerie supernatural phenomena. To survive, players must wield the Camera Obscura to battle spirits and unravel the mysteries of the town. A version for the Xbox, titled Director's Cut, came out in 2004 and featured extra content. A reimagined version of the game, known as Project Zero 2: Wii Edition, was launched for the Wii in 2012 in Europe and Japan.

Storyline

Fatal Frame II is set in the fictional Minakami region of Japan. In the game's present day, plans are underway to build a dam in a forest located there, but the area is also home to Minakami Village (lit. "All God's Village"), a "[l]ost" community where most of the game is set. The player discovers that Minakami Village was the site of the "Crimson Sacrifice Ritual," which failed and led to the village's disappearance—hence its name, "The Lost Village." In the present timeline of the game, there is an urban legend about this lost village, claiming that anyone who becomes lost in the Minakami forest will be forever trapped within it. The main characters of Fatal Frame II are Mio and Mayu Amakura, twin sisters visiting their favorite childhood playground in Minakami before it is submerged by the dam. The primary antagonist is Sae Kurosawa, the vengeful spirit of the only Twin Shrine Maiden sacrificed in the failed ritual. She believes Mio is her long-lost twin sister Yae and uses Mayu to try to complete the ritual with her. Other key characters include the spirit of Itsuki Tachibana, a young man who also mistakes Mio for Yae but attempts to help her and Mayu escape; and Seijiro Makabe, a folklorist who once visited Minakami Village with a prototype Camera Obscura (the same camera Mio uses in the game), along with his assistant, Ryozo Munakata. Makabe later became a temporary sacrifice to the Abyss, known as a Kusab. While Mio and Mayu's story occurs after that of Miku Hinasaki, the events in Minakami Village take place before those in the Himuro mansion from the original game.
