The PlayStation 1 version of "Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition" was released in Japan on June 24 and in North America on November 30, becoming the sole Hyper Neo Geo 64 title to be adapted for a home console. It was later made available as a downloadable title on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable through the PlayStation Network in Japan on April 25, 2007.
The game revisits the story of the original Fatal Fury video game. It brings in new characters Toji Sakata and Tsugumi Sendo while featuring Mai Shiranui, Kim Kaphwan, and Li Xiangfei as competitors in the original King of Fighters tournament. Ryuji Yamazaki appears as a mid-boss, and Ryo Sakazaki makes a guest appearance as Mr. Karate, linking the events of Art of Fighting 2 to this title.
