The Red Wings launch an assault on Mysidia to seize their Water Crystal and bring it back to the Kingdom of Baron. Later, Cecil, the Red Wings' captain, questions the king's intentions and is consequently demoted and ordered to accompany Kain, his friend and leader of the Dragoons, to deliver a ring to the Village of Mist. There, Kain and Cecil witness in horror as monsters emerge from the ring and destroy the village. A young girl named Rydia is the sole survivor and, in a fit of rage, summons a creature called Titan. The monster triggers an earthquake, splitting Cecil and Kain apart. Cecil awakens later and takes the injured Rydia to a nearby inn. Baron soldiers arrive to capture Rydia, but Cecil fights to protect her, and she joins his quest. It is later discovered that Rosa, Cecil's love interest, had secretly followed him and is suffering from a severe fever. Shortly after, Cecil and Rydia meet Tellah, who is traveling to Damcyan Castle to rescue his runaway daughter, Anna. However, Anna is killed when the Red Wings bomb the castle. Edward, Anna's boyfriend and the prince of Damcyan, reveals that the Red Wings' new commander, Golbez, orchestrated the attack to steal the Fire Crystal, just as they had taken the Water Crystal from Mysidia. Tellah leaves the group to seek vengeance against Golbez for Anna's death. After obtaining a cure for Rosa, the group heads to Fabul to safeguard the Wind Crystal. There, they meet Master Yang, a warrior monk who serves the kingdom and guards the crystal. The Red Wings attack, and Kain returns as one of Golbez's subordinates. He defeats Cecil in battle; when Rosa steps in, Golbez captures her and Kain takes the crystal. On the journey back to Baron, the group is attacked by Leviathan and scattered.
