Final Fantasy IV -Interlude- is an additional side-game included in Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection alongside Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. It can be accessed and finished separately from the main games through the main menu, providing a narrative bridge between the two titles.
In *Interlude*, players assume the role of Cecil. The story kicks off at Baron Castle, where Cecil experiences a dream of one of the Crystal Chambers. In it, he sees Rydia and hears a voice declare, "Finally, it has a new form." Just as the voice is about to be revealed, Rosa wakes him. Cecil and Rosa board one of the Red Wings airships and head to Damcyan. At the same time, in the Feymarch, Rydia is about to leave when she is stopped by Asura, the Queen of the Feymarch, who questions her destination. Rydia explains she is going to Damcyan for the city's reconstruction celebration, and Asura allows her to pass. During the celebration, a guard informs Yang that monks have been brutally attacked at Mt. Hobbs. Upon hearing this, Yang decides to leave, and Cecil and Rosa offer to accompany him. When they reach the summit of Mt. Hobbs, they find two wounded monks, whom Rosa tends to. Shortly after, they are ambushed by a Dad Bomb. After defeating it, they travel to Fabul, where Yang's wife, Sheila, is about to give birth to their daughter, Ursula. Yang asks Cecil to be Ursula’s godfather, and he happily agrees. As Cecil and Rosa prepare to leave, they run into Cid, Luca, Palom, and Porom, who warn Cecil of a monster swarm emerging from the Sealed Cave. As they prepare to depart, Cecil tells Yang to stay with his family. Cid notices that Rosa looks unwell, and Cecil asks Yang to look after her while he is away. Upon arriving at the Sealed Cave, they observe the Tower of Babel glowing with light. Edge, in Eblan, also notices the light and sets out to enter the Tower via an underground passage. When Cecil and the others reach the Crystal Chamber, they are attacked by a Demon Wall and barely manage to defeat it. Inside the chamber, they encounter Rydia, who cannot recall where she was, though she mentions that "they" were calling her. While the group debates who "they" might be, they agree to investigate the Tower of Babel. As they ascend the tower, Rydia begins to regain her summons and behaves increasingly oddly. When they pass the cannon control room, Rydia enters it, and three guards emerge to stop Cecil and the others from following. The three guards combine into a Deus Ex Machina, at which point Edge arrives to assist in defeating it. After the sentry is destroyed, the group enters the control room, but Rydia is missing. They decide to continue climbing, hoping to find her. Instead, they discover she is an impostor, who attacks them using the Eidolons she has acquired. When the fake Rydia summons Bahamut, the real Rydia appears and convinces him to spare the party. Though they defeat the fake, she escapes and reports to her "creator," who is located in the True Moon, that the Eidolon project is complete. Back on Earth, in Cecil's chamber, Rosa lies in bed, and Cecil asks if she is feeling well. It is then revealed that Rosa is pregnant. Everyone is thrilled by the news, and they urge Cecil to start thinking of names. Meanwhile, on Mt. Ordeals, Kain, still atoning for his past actions in *Final Fantasy IV*, hears a voice calling to him.
