Final Fantasy VI has been remade for Android and iOS devices, offering a more visually refined 2D experience with greater detail than earlier versions. A Windows PC version, based on the Android port, was made available on Steam, featuring PC-optimized controls, Steam achievements, and trading cards. The game was removed from sale on July 28th, 2021, in anticipation of the launch of Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster.
Final Fantasy VI follows a struggle between the world-conquering Gestahlian Empire and a resistance group called the Returners, set in a fantastical steampunk world. The Empire has gained immense power through experiments on captured espers, legendary magical beings. The Returners aim to harness magical strength to stand against the Empire, and Terra Branford, an amnesiac ex-imperial soldier, becomes crucial to both sides in understanding magic and espers. The game offers up to fourteen playable characters, the largest in the series, and utilizes the Active Time Battle pseudo-turn-based command system. Players can field up to four characters in a party, though certain events require managing three separate parties of four and switching between them. Each character has a signature ability, such as Terra's Trance, Locke's Steal, Edgar's Tools, or Sabin's Blitz, and can learn Magic spells by earning AP through battles while equipped with magicite. Each character also has a rare Desperation Attack that may trigger randomly after using the Attack command when their health is critically low.
