Storyline

In the town of Narshe, Terra takes part in an Imperial mission aimed at capturing a powerful Esper trapped within ice. When they find it, a magical connection forms between Terra and the Esper, leading to the deaths of the soldiers with her and knocking Terra out. When she wakes up, she's told the Empire had been controlling her through a device known as a "slave crown." With the crown now gone, Terra can only recall her name and her unique ability to use magic without aid. She is then introduced to a group called the "Returners," and agrees to join their fight against the Empire. The Returners discover that Imperial troops, commanded by Kefka, are preparing another attempt to take the frozen Esper. After fending off Kefka's assault, Terra has another magical encounter with the Esper, transforming into a being that resembles one and flying to a distant continent. When the group tracks her down, they are met by an Esper named Ramuh, who tells them Terra might need help from another Esper trapped in the Empire's capital city, Vector.
