The Steam edition of Final Fantasy VIII includes various in-game improvements, such as a speed-up function for skipping through cutscenes and FMVs, as well as built-in cheat options like Battle Assist, which makes combat nearly unwinnable for enemies. Similar to Final Fantasy VII, this re-release features the Magic Booster, enabling players to max out their characters' magic levels at 100. The game also supports achievements and cloud-based save storage. Windowed mode and high-resolution display settings (up to 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz) are now available. However, the soundtrack remains based on the original MIDI tracks from the 1999 release, rather than the PlayStation audio, unlike the 2012 version of Final Fantasy VII, which received an updated score. Chocobo World can be accessed directly from the launcher after launching Final Fantasy VIII.
Final Fantasy VIII takes place in a fantastical world infused with science fiction elements, centering on Squall Leonhart, a young SeeD mercenary who undertakes missions assigned by Balamb Garden. Squall and his companions are recruited to assist a group called the Forest Owls, led by Rinoa Heartilly, which eventually leads to a larger confrontation with the forces commanded by Sorceress Edea.
