Final Lap is a racing video game developed by Namco and released in the United States by Atari Games in 1987. It was the first title to utilize Namco's new System 2 hardware and served as a direct follow-up to the company's earlier Pole Position games from 1982 and 1983. Final Lap was the first racing game to support up to eight players competing at once on the Suzuka Circuit in a Formula One-style race. This groundbreaking feature was achieved by connecting as many as four two-player arcade cabinets in a sit-down configuration. It was also likely the first racing game to use "rubber banding," a mechanic designed to keep less skilled players from falling too far behind the leader, a technique later expanded upon by the Mario Kart series. The game also featured a single-player mode where the player's score was determined by how far they could drive before time expired or before completing four laps (the default setting, though arcade operators could adjust the lap count to as few as three or as many as six).
