I’ve always found comfort in the rain... it drowns out the quiet, creating a peaceful, soothing rhythm. The silence bothers me, because it means they’re hiding, and if they’re hiding, they’re getting nearer, and if they get close enough, they’ll come for me— for what I did, or failed to do... for what I wasn’t able to do.
Mary Schmidt, a young girl, is visiting a therapist due to recurring nightmares involving monstrous versions of RAT and CAT. This fear has begun to affect her creativity, leading her to draw only those terrifying creatures. The therapist determines that the only way for Mary to overcome her nightmares and return to a normal childhood is to face the monsters directly. Mary enters the Dreamscape, where she is guided by the Origami Cat, a creation she and her mother made long ago. It also represents "the last memory of her," hinting at her mother's death. While the Origami Cat proves to be a helpful companion, knocking it off the ledge each night will cause it to transform into a monster, haunting Mary forever in retaliation, leading to a deceptive ending.
