Gun Hazard is a side-scrolling shooter featuring deep RPG elements and serving as a spin-off of the Front Mission series. The gameplay bears a resemblance to titles like Cybernator or Metal Warriors. Players navigate through various stages using an area map. Inside each stage, control shifts to Albert and his wanzer as they traverse left and right across the screen. The wanzer can jump and fire both a primary and a special weapon. At any moment, Albert can exit his heavily armed machine to explore on foot. Though more exposed, Albert can access areas the wanzer can't, become a smaller target, and use his jetpack for continuous flight. Players earn money and experience by completing mission goals and defeating enemy wanzers. Throughout the story, Albert can also recruit additional characters, some of whom can be assigned support roles. These allies offer a range of cover fire options during missions. They also level up and gain experience. A variety of weapons and armor can be discovered or purchased. Key features include the Booster ability, which lets the wanzer hover and perform higher jumps, and the Dash ability, enabling swift lateral movement.
Set in 2064, the story of *Gun Hazard* unfolds across the globe in an alternate *Front Mission* universe. In the early 21st century, countries around the world clashed over control of dwindling natural resources. As supplies continued to shrink, global powers joined forces in search of a solution to the escalating crisis. Recognizing the promise of space-based energy, they initiated the construction of an orbital elevator called "Atlas" in 2024. As completion of the elevator neared, a major advancement in miniature fusion reactors was made. The nations behind Atlas then shifted their focus away from the elevator and toward the new fusion technology. Left incomplete, Atlas became a monument to lost aspirations as the world once again spiraled into conflict. One such conflict is the Bergen coup d'état in 2064. The story of *Gun Hazard* centers on a soldier stationed in Bergen, Norway, named Albert Grabner (whose parents live in Eningen, Germany). In January 2064, Ark Hellbrand of the Bergen Army launches a coup d'état to overthrow the government led by President Moss Orwen. As the coup forces gain control of the country, President Orwen calls for help from NORAD and a faction of the Bergen Army loyal to him. Albert Grabner is dispatched to serve as the president's bodyguard and assist him in fleeing the country. However, both are soon captured by Hellbrand. Albert manages to escape from prison with the aid of Brenda Lockheart, a mercenary working for the Kernelight Association. After escaping Bergen and arriving in New York City, they visit the Kernelight Association's headquarters. Determined to return to Bergen and rescue Orwen, Albert agrees to work for the Kernelight Association in order to find allies who can help him defeat Ark. As they take on missions for the mercenary guild and travel through war-torn nations around the world, Albert begins to uncover a connection between the civil conflicts, the Bergen coup d'état, and a shadowy organization known only as "The Society."
