Gaiares is a side-scrolling shooter that launched on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis in 1990. Its gameplay closely mirrors that of the R-Type series, as well as other popular shoot 'em ups like Gradius and Thunder Force, which it aimed to rival.
By the year 3000, Earth has transformed into a deadly, radioactive wasteland, stripped of life and left as a toxic graveyard. This devastation has pushed humanity to the brink of extinction. The ruthless space pirates known as the Gulfer, commanded by the wicked Queen ZZ Badnusty, intend to exploit the planet's pollution to forge devastating weapons of mass destruction. The United Star Cluster of Leezaluth issues a dire warning to Earth, revealing that if the Gulfer cannot be stopped, they will be forced to trigger a supernova of Earth's sun—an act that would obliterate the planet and end the human race. However, if the mission is successful (though Queen ZZ Badnusty remains skeptical), Leezaluth promises to use its advanced technology to heal and restore Earth to its former glory. Dan Dare (known as Diaz in the Japanese version), a young Earth pilot, is selected to command a cutting-edge fighter ship designed to battle the Gulfer. The ship is equipped with Leezaluth's powerful experimental weapon, the TOZ System, which will be controlled by Alexis, Leezaluth's emissary.
