During the early days of the Demon Age, a fearsome demon known as "Dragon Master" was brought back to life by his followers in the underworld. To safeguard the peace of the overworld, the two eldest Fuuma brothers took on the Dragon Master in battle. Neither could overcome him, and both fell in defeat, losing their powerful Wave Swords, also known as Hadoukens. Determined to avenge their deaths, the last remaining Fuuma brother swore to kill the Dragon Master and reclaim the Hadoukens. *Getsu Fuuma Den* is an action game featuring light RPG elements. You explore the overworld along set paths that often split into multiple directions, taking you to shops, encounter zones with other characters, and dungeons. When you enter a dungeon, you control your character on a side-scrolling platform, leaping and battling foes with your sword or other weapons. Later in the game, you'll also encounter a few first-person dungeons. Inside these dungeons, you can gather money and later use it to purchase weapons and other gear in the overworld.
During the first year of the Demon Age, the demon lord Ryuukotsuki broke free from hell and devised a plan to take over the surface world governed by the three Getsu brothers. The brothers stood against Ryuukotsuki, each wielding one of the three sacred Pulse Blades, ancestral weapons passed down through their clan for generations. Despite their efforts, the brothers were ultimately overpowered by the demon, leaving only Fuuma, the youngest sibling, as the sole survivor. Determined to avenge his fallen brothers, Fuuma journeys into Kyouki-tou to reclaim the stolen Pulse Blades and awaken the spirits of his kin to confront Ryuukotsuki once and for all.
