Summary

God of War Collection is a bundle featuring action-adventure titles from Sony’s God of War franchise. It contains God of War and God of War II, which were first launched on the PlayStation 2. The set offers enhanced visuals and smoother performance compared to the original releases. In the games, players take on the role of Kratos, fighting legendary beasts and deities in a storyline rooted in Greek mythology.

Storyline

The narrative is primarily conveyed through flashbacks, beginning with a scene from the present in which Kratos stands on the highest cliff in Greece, mourning the gods' betrayal before throwing himself into the sea below. The player, however, begins the game three weeks earlier, and Kratos' past is recounted by the Narrator throughout the game (later revealed to be the Titan Gaia in *God of War II*). Kratos was once a fierce Spartan warrior who expanded his fifty-strong unit into a mighty army through cunning, strength, and relentless warfare. During a brutal clash with a barbarian force, his army was nearly wiped out. In a moment of desperation, Kratos pledged his life and loyalty to Ares, the God of War, in exchange for victory. Ares, recognizing Kratos' immense potential, accepted the deal, obliterated the barbarians, and gifted Kratos the Blades of Chaos—curved weapons forged in the depths of Hades and permanently chained to his arms. Kratos then became Ares' loyal enforcer, leading his Spartan forces in the conquest of much of Greece. In one campaign, they attacked a village devoted to Athena, slaughtering its people and burning their homes. Ares, using divine influence, drove Kratos into a violent frenzy, compelling him to kill all who opposed him. Despite his inner turmoil and the warnings of a local oracle, Kratos stormed the village’s temple and butchered everyone inside. When the rage finally passed, he discovered that his final victims had been his wife and daughter. Ares claimed the massacre was a test of Kratos' strength, stripping him of the last remnants of his humanity. The village’s oracle then cursed Kratos, binding the ashes of his family to his skin. This pale, ghostly film earned Kratos the name "the Ghost of Sparta," and instilled terror in all of Greece. In the aftermath, Kratos severed his ties with Ares and wandered the world, haunted by his past, while serving the other gods of Olympus for the next ten years.
