Storyline
After the events of *God of War II*, *God of War III* begins immediately with a powerful opening narration by Zeus, who addresses the actions of the defiant Kratos. Now commanding a small army of Titans he has freed from the Great War—thanks to the power of the Fates—Kratos has become a force to be reckoned with. The Olympian gods swiftly respond to the threat; Helios charges across Olympus in his chariot, Hermes darts down the mountain's heights, Zeus observes from above, Hercules is ordered to lead his forces into battle, Hades leaps into the fray in his colossal form, and Poseidon, wielding his mastery over water, descends from Olympus like a missile. He delivers a fatal strike to the Titan Epimetheus and transforms into a towering aquatic entity, summoning a host of Hippocampi to assist in the battle. As the most dangerous opponent in the conflict, Poseidon has already crushed many Titans and now turns his attention toward Gaia herself. Kratos confronts the Sea God, luring him into Gaia’s grasp and forcing him from his divine form onto a separate platform. After a brief exchange, Kratos brutally attacks Poseidon, plucking out his eyes and breaking his neck before casting him into the ocean. With Poseidon dead, the seas erupt in chaos, causing massive flooding that nearly drowns the world and wipes out most of humanity, leaving only those on the peaks of Olympus untouched.
